Reflections ~ Spirit Embodied
As he was settling down to sleep, my six year old son was hugging my arm like a
teddy bear and whispered, “I love you, Mom. If you weren’t here I wouldn’t be quite the same.”
“What do you mean, buddy?”
“Someone else could have made me. My outside would be different in the way it
looks, but I would be the same. My inside body wouldn’t be different.”
“Mmmm.”
I lay there contemplating what he had said. He was, in essence, describing his core Self, his Spirit, his Essential Nature. He was describing a certain indescribable. I wondered, in his youth and innocence, what that feels like to him. What does he, as a 6 year old, feel that lets him know that the shell he lives in is a vehicle for his essence, to feel that inside him self there is an essential him that is not actually his body, but is something that is fluid, invisible, and holds the spark of life; Holds access to Love.
We as adults can connect to that! Through the practice of mindfulness, inner tracking and ceremony, we can connect to our true Essence, all the while tending to the truth of the struggle, that is being human.
